Should I use a single connection for voice and data?

When using ADSL for VoIP to achieve the highest call quality we recommend dedicating connectivity 100% to VoIP rather than mix voice and data. We would only recommend mixing voice and data on connections with plenty of capacity and with equipment to manage QoS effectively such as with fibre leased lines.

For locations where it is impractical to have dedicated connectivity for VoIP such as home offices and when on the move, the quality will be dependent on the available bandwidth and the quality of the underlying connection. Be aware that some home routers do not function correctly with VoIP devices and that if this is the case you may need to purchase a new router.

Reasons not to mix voice and data:-

  • General Internet traffic interferes with call quality especially on uploads
  • There is an unknown capacity for calls
  • QoS on ADSL routers is hit and miss.
  • Computer problems such as those that send spam affect the operation of phones.
  • People with poor VoIP quality nearly always share voice and data on a single Internet connection.
  • A single connection provides no redundancy
